Negotiations Open Early for Red River Co-op Gas Bar Employees

The union is preparing for the bargaining of a new collective agreement for the members working at the Red River Co-op Gas Bars. Union negotiator Erin Selby will spearhead the bargaining committee. A first step in preparing for negotiations is to hear from the members their suggestions on what changes/improvements they would like to see negotiating into their new contract.

Safeway members across Manitoba ratify new four-year agreement

On Sunday March 23, UFCW Local 832 members working at Safeway across Manitoba voted 94.7 per cent in favour of a new four-year agreement.

Votes were held simultaneously in Winnipeg, Brandon, Steinbach, Selkirk, Neepawa, Dauphin and Thompson. This was the first agreement for the members under new owners, Sobeys West Inc., who purchased Canada Safeway last year. The four divested stores recently purchased by Federated Co-op also voted on this agreement, as the closing date for those stores won’t take place until mid-May.

Tentative deal reached in Safeway talks

March 15, 2014

After months of negotiaitons and both sides holding firm on issues important to them, a tentative deal was reached today at 1:30pm. Members are asked to attend a ratification vote on March 23. Locations will be posted shortly. The tentative deal has the unanimous support of the bargaining committee.


In the final stretch

The committee broke from the table at 1am on Saturday, March 15 after reviewing the company's last offer. With a few hours left to prepare a reply, President Traeger gave the committee a chance to get some sleep before both sides are set to meet in the morning. 


Down to the brass tacks for Safeway bargaining

The Safeway bargaining committee feel like the end of negotiations are getting close. As President Traeger says, "We're down to the brass tacks." There is still some heavy lifting left and the committee is prepared to work through the night to get a deal done. Stay tuned.




Safeway bargaining committee waits...

Since the last update last night the bargaining committee has been watiing for the company to return to the table. First they were awaiting word on some clairification on a monetary issue. While the committee works on itemizing bargaining proposals we will continue to wait for the company to come back to the table.


Safeway bargaining from a union rep's perspective

As part of any major negotiations, union representatives play an important role at the table. They give the lead negotiator insight into how the collective agreement is working and assist throughout the process. Union rep's are the ones who file grievances and deal with the company's human resources department on a day-to-day basis. Phil Kraychuk and Mike Howden are UFCW Local 832 union rep's who gave their thoughts about how bargaining is going.

Tonight could be a big night as both sides have tried to turn around proposals quickly, and have acknowledged that time is running out.

UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger gave a quick update during the dinner break and both sides resumed talks tonight at 7:15pm.

If talks continue tonight, expect another update.
