Serving and Providing for Manitoba’s Hard-Working Families
Since its inception in 1938, UFCW Local 832 has grown to represent members who work across Manitoba in multiple sectors including retail, security, food processing, hospitality, warehousing and the support sector.
Under the elected leadership of Bernard Christophe between 1964 and 2002, UFCW Local 832 grew from around 700 members to more than 15,000. Our membership today is 18,000 strong and growing, under the leadership of president Jeff Traeger.
How We Operate
As a democratic organization, UFCW Local 832 holds elections every few years to choose a president, secretary-treasurer and several vice-presidents to serve on our executive board. Every member has a vote in these elections. We try to ensure our sitting vice-presidents represent a strong cross-section of workplaces across Manitoba.
Members also vote whenever a major decision about their workplace needs to be made. This may mean accepting orrejecting an employer’s contract offer, or deciding whether a strike is needed to win benefits an employeris reluctant to provide.
Our Union Local offices are located in Winnipeg and Brandon. They’re operated by a staff of full-time union representatives who are on call and available 24 hours a day to members who need assistance. Union reps spend as much time as possible at our unionized workplaces, meeting formally or informally with members to discuss concerns and monitor workplace management and working conditions.
Specialists on staff are available to help members with legal counsel, workers compensation, member education, organizing, health and safety considerations, and communications. Our union local’s staff is rounded out by secretarial, clerical, reception and accounting personnel who keep everything running smoothly.
