Diageo Negotiations Scheduled to Begin

October 23, 2018

The union committee, led by Secretary-Treasurer Beatrice Bruske and assisted by union rep Phil Kraychuk and members Corey Kowalski and Steve Lebel, will be meeting with the company to exchange proposals and begin bargaining on December 6, 2018. Secretary-Treasurer Bruske will be providing regular updates as negotiations progress.


Arbitration Process Set for Diageo

With the negotiating committees at Diageo unable to reach an agreement on several of the monetary issues such as wages, vacation, sick time, benefits and pension, the parties agreed to the arbitration process.

As such, the union and the company’s legal counsels met with the government-appointed arbitrator on May 17 and have set out the following timeframe:

— June 28: parties exchange Briefs
— July 13:  parties exchange Reply Briefs
— July 28:  arbitration hearing date
— August 23: Arbitrator's decision will be issued on or before


Crown Royal Workers and Company End Strike

The UFCW Local 832 members working at the Diageo plant in Gimli Manitoba, mutually agreed to end the strike by 56 per cent and have the outstanding issues dealt with by an arbitrator. Outstanding issues still to be decided by an arbitrator are wages, pension, vacation, benefits and sick time. This speeds up the alternative dispute resolution process that would kick in on day 61 of the strike. Workers will start to come back to work on April 25 and an arbitrator will be selected within ten days and will hear submissions from both sides within thirty days.

Strike continues at Crown Royal Plant

On April 1, UFCW Local 832 members who have been walking a picket line since March 5 voted 81 per cent to reject the company’s final offer.

Both sides met with a Manitoba Labour Board appointed conciliation officer and the company presented their final offer.

“Diageo made a final offer that was an improvement from what they gave us prior to the strike. With these improvements we presented them to the group and the membership voted it down,” stated UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger.

On Friday, March 4, the UFCW Local 832 members working at the Diageo plant in Gimli voted 98 per cent to reject the company’s final offer.

On February 3 members voted 100 per cent to give the bargaining committee strike mandate if a fair deal could not be reached. The strike mandate helped move bargaining during the last round of talks but both sides couldn’t reach an agreement.


Diageo members vote 100 per cent for strike action

On February 3, UFCW local 832 members working at Diageo Canada in Gimli, voted 100 per cent in favour of strike action. The members will be walking a picket line on Friday, March 4 at midnight if a deal is not reached before then.

Talks are scheduled to resume on February 16 and the bargaining committee believes that the strong strike mandate will help them at the table to achieve a fair deal. The union is committed to resolving all outstanding issues in a manner that is fair and equitable to both sides.

After five days of bargaining the negotiating committee for Diageo in Gimli continued to address non-monetary items.

While the expiry date of the current collective agreement is January 31, 2013, negotiations continued on November 13 in search of agreeing on a new agreement. While non-monetary issues are slowly being dealt with. After negotiating four consecutive days both sides have agreed to meet from December 3 to the 7.
