Workers at Safeway give strong strike mandate

March 4, 2018

March 4, 2018 - At 8:00 p.m. Strike Mandate Meetings finished across the province for members working at Safeway. Members all across Manitoba came out in overwhelming numbers to vote yes for a strike mandate.

"This strike mandate result sends a strong message to Sobeys that the membership won't be bullied," stated President Jeff Traeger. "Sobeys purchased a good company and mismanaged it into the ground, ignoring their long-time employee's experience and advice. Now they want those employees to pay for their mistakes."

In Neepawa, Dauphin, Brandon, Thompson, and Winnipeg, members came out in overwhelming numbers and voted 98% in favour of giving the bargaining committee a strike mandate. The collective agreement expires on March 17, 2018, meaning Safeway workers across the province would be in a legal position to strike on March 18th, 2018. A strike deadline has not been set.

"I have never seen a company with such disregard for its workers. The collective agreement expires in under two weeks. The company has only proposed conditions that gut the current collective agreement and only one other non-monetary item has been resolved in the five-hours of bargaining that has been accomplished so far," said, President Jeff Traeger.

The union will be sitting back down with the company, Monday, March 5, 2018, we are ready to work around the clock to avoid a strike and achieve a fair contract for the workers.

Thank you to workers at Safeway for giving your bargaining committee a 98% strike mandate.

UFCW Local 832 represents over 2200 workers at Safeway stores across the province.
