Deadline is looming for Sobeys contract

March 13, 2018

The contract with Sobeys expires at midnight on Saturday, March 17, 2018, which leaves us only a few days left to get a deal.

“I would say that we have done a good job of narrowing the issues, which is the small piece of good news that I have for you in this update,” said President Jeff Traeger. "The bad news is that the issues that are left, are all critical, the company has not significantly backed down from the concessions that they have tabled that we presented to all of our members at the strike vote meetings a couple of weeks ago."

Union negotiator Martin Trudel said, “This weighty mandate will be a great help when we resume negotiations with the company for the final bargaining session. It gives the company a clear message that the group is united.”

The union has scheduled meetings for May 4 and 6 so that members get the opportunity to either accept or reject the company’s last offer or declare to go on strike. Members can watch for further updates on the...

Getting close to crunch-time with Sobeys

March 10, 2018

"I would say cautiously there has been some progress, it hasn't been on any of the major issues or the major items. We have reached an agreement or moved off of a variety of proposals on both sides. We've narrowed the proposals down to what is a manageable number, but the problem is that they are all the big concessions that the employer originally tabled back on January 15th," said Jeff Traeger.

The company has reiterated that stores will be closing in MB no matter what the result of collective bargaining is, and despite your bargaining committee asking, we have not been told ...

UFCW Local 832 celebrates the historical achievements of women

March 6, 2018

International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8.

This day arose from the struggles that women faced at the turn of the century, when population growth and a change in working conditions saw many women in the workforce, facing long hours, minimum pay and no right to vote.

On March 8, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made, while understanding that we still have a long way to go.

UFCW Canada has launched the #NoMore campaign to help end gender-based violence. The goal of the #...

Workers at Safeway give strong strike mandate

March 4, 2018

March 4, 2018 - At 8:00 p.m. Strike Mandate Meetings finished across the province for members working at Safeway. Members all across Manitoba came out in overwhelming numbers to vote yes for a strike mandate.

"This strike mandate result sends a strong message to Sobeys that the membership won't be bullied," stated President Jeff Traeger. "Sobeys purchased a good company and mismanaged it into the ground, ignoring their long-time employee's experience and advice. Now they want those employees to pay for their mistakes."

In Neepawa, Dauphin, Brandon, Thompson, and Winnipeg,...
