New Website for Local 832

In 1996 UFCW Local 832 went online. Former communications director Don Keith, who retired in 2001, was instrumental in developing the website that has been known as the place to get up-to-date information on the local's news and initiatives. Effective this month members will see a new look to the website. Local 832 president participates in launching of new Manitoba 'brand'

On June 14 the Premiers Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) unveiled a new brand for the Province of Manitoba. Over the last couple of weeks "teaser" commercials have been airing on local television stations featuring an assortment of well known Manitobans, including UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler. Wages for the 81 UFCW Local 832 members employed at SunGro Horticulture will rise by eight per cent over the term of their new agreement

On June 9, 81 UFCW Local 832 members employed at Sungro ratified a new four-year agreement. The vote was 78 per cent in favour of acceptance. Members will see an eight per cent wage increase over the four-year deal along with improvements in meal allowances, evening and night shift premiums and footwear allowances. There are also increases in life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, short term disability, pension, vision care, and health care insurance benefits. Many other language changes were made to improve and clarify the new collective agreement.

All members invited to attend Local 832's Family Picnic on Sunday, July 9 at Fun Mountain

All Local 832 members are invited to come out for a wild day of fun at Fun Mountain on Sunday, July 9. The picnic will go ahead rain or shine, with a barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets, which include admission into the park and the barbecue, are adults (12 and over) $7.50, children 3 to 11 $5.00, and children under 3 free. A new contract ratified by Local 832 members at the Reh-Fit Centre includes an eight per cent wage increase over the life of the agreement

On Sunday, June 5, the members at the Reh-Fit Centre ratified a new three-year collective agreement by 100 per cent. Members will see an eight per cent wage increase over the life of the contract. A two per cent retroactive wage increase will be effective from April 2005, and another two per cent wage increase will be retroactive from April 2006. On top of the eight per cent another $1 an hour will be given to the Cardiology Lab Co-ordinator and a 50-cent an hour increase for the Front Desk Membership Co-ordinator. Local 832 Training Centre providing career transition services to members who lost their jobs when the Fort Garry Care Centre closed

Fort Garry Care Centre, a personal care home, closed its doors displacing approximately 50 Local 832 union members. The Training Centres Career Transition Services has been helping these laid off workers with everything from resume writing to CPR training. Last month a public liaison officer from Human Resource Skills Development Canada attended the Training Centre to assist members with the application process for Employment Insurance. Career Transition Coach Shirley Lamboo will continue to meet with Fort Garry Care members in an effort to assess their needs and in job placement....

Six UFCW Local 832 members attended the Manitoba Federation of Labour's recent Health and Safety Workshop

The Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) held its 25th Annual Health and Safety Conference in Thompson on May 11 and 12. The goal of this conference was to use the most up-to-date laws, regulations, tools and experiences to make our workplaces safer, healthier, and injury free now and in the future. Almost 7,600 people saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by using the Local 832 income tax preparation service

UFCW Local 832 members and their families kept George Combiadakis (left) extremely busy again this year. From mid-February until the end of April approximately 7,600 people utilized the income tax preparation service that Local 832 provides for the members. This was an increase of approximately 400 more people using the tax service this year. It seems obvious that one of the main reasons for the popularity of the UFCW Local 832 tax preparation service is the cost. Nearly 300 Local 832 members employed at McCain Foods in Carberry will receive wage increases of 7.5 per cent under the terms of their new contract

On May 18 and 19, members of UFCW Local 832 employed at McCain Foods in Carberry ratified a new three-year collective agreement by 80 per cent. The three-year agreement sees wage increases of 7.5 per cent. Members will see improvements in vacation entitlements, extended health benefits and severance pay.
